Pupil premium

Pupil premium is additional money delegated to the academy and is matched to the number of children who are eligible for free school meals and children who are from service families. At Hillocks Primary Academy we use our funding for a range of purposes suited to the individual needs of our children.

How we intend to use the grant

Quality first teaching and intervention

The EEF recommends a tiered approach to closing the gap. Tier 1 is high quality teaching for all, tier 2 is targeted support using teaching assistants (TAs), high quality one to one and small group interventions and planning for children with special educational needs (SEN) with tier 3 offering support in pastoral aspects, attendance and social and emotional learning.

Tier 1

  • CPD support to ensure reading teachers are equipped to address gaps in phonics knowledge.
  • Maths text books to ensure consistency of approach
  • Devices and the infrastructure to ensure high quality remote learning

Tier 2

  • One to one and small group intervention to address gaps in mathematics, reading and phonics in key stage 1 and lower key stage 2.
  • Support for one to one tutoring to ensure upper key stage two children catch up on lost learning

Tier 3

  • Targeted therapies to support mental health

How we will assess the effect of this expenditure on the educational attainment of our children

  • Pupil progress and attainment will be tracked through the three formal data points that we have during the year, this will allow us to track overall progress and attainment of children. A detailed analysis will be presented to senior leaders after each data point, this will include analysis of all groups so trends can be spotted and acted upon.
  • Internal tracking of the small group intervention will be used to track progress, these will be reviewed at the end of each term.

PE and sports premium

All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.

The PE and sport premium can help primary schools to achieve this aim, providing primary schools with £320m of government funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered through their core budgets. It is allocated directly to schools so they have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their children.

Impact of the funding

Impact on pupils participation and attainment in PE and sport:

  • Children value their sessions with the Nottingham Forest sports coach, enjoying the opportunity to take part in outdoor physical activity, which helps them use their energy positively and improves their focus in class.
  • Eight SEND pupils have taken part in weekly tailored PE sessions led by Nottingham Forest sports coach, resulting in improved coordination, ball skills, teamwork, spatial awareness and social connection, while nurture staff have increased their confidence and ability to adapt PE to meet SEND needs.
  • Sports coaches and the behaviour mentor have delivered PE clubs at break, lunchtime and after school, providing structured opportunities for pupils to stay active beyond lessons.
  • Bikeability training has improved pupils’ road safety knowledge and cycling confidence, teaching safe signaling, traffic awareness and safe use of junctions, leading to more pupils cycling to school and promoting independence, healthier lifestyles and reduced car use. 24 foundations stage children successfully completed the program, 18 year 5 pupils and 21 year 6 pupils completed Bikeability level 1 and 2 training.
  • Pupil participation in sport has increased, with 49 children from years 3 to 6 attending a sports after school club this year. Of these, 5 are pupils with SEND and 18 are identified as Pupil Premium, reflecting strong engagement across a diverse range of learners.

Impact on teaching and the wider school:

  • The Nottingham Forest sports coach has delivered targeted staff training, including dance and gymnastics, strengthening the quality of provision, with 8 out of 10 staff reporting greater confidence in planning and leading PE lessons.
  • Nurture staff have supported each session, and through ongoing Q&A and reflection, they have shown increased confidence in delivering small P.E. activities themselves. They also now have a deeper understanding of how to adapt physical education to meet the individual needs of our SEND learners.

How this will be sustained

The use of specialist coaching and improved resources has helped to build capacity within the school and ensure that improvements to PE, sport and physical activity provision will continue to benefit pupils in future years.

Swimming and water safety

In line with the national curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety, the data for the current cohort of year 6 pupils is shown below:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 41%
  • Able to use a range of strokes effectively: 52%
  • Able to perform safe self-rescue: 100%

Extra swimming lessons have increased confidence, especially for children with limited experience or anxiety about water. Swimming sessions have improved heart health and muscle strength for two year 6 pupils with muscle conditions. Top-up swimming lessons will continue next year for current year 5 pupils who cannot yet swim 25 metres confidently.
